Makaylee is a PhD candidate in the Penn State Ecology Program. They study managed and wild bee nutrition, as well as the interaction between nutrition and other environmental stressors in bees.

I have way too many bee things! I also like to collect framed moths and butterflies.

8 If you could switch professions, what would you do?I would be a computer programmer. I’m terrible with computers, but I have friends who do this and they always seem to be on vacation while making 6 figures a year. Seems like the dream.
9 If you could switch science fields, what field would you want to work in?

Anything that would let me travel for research – maybe marine biology or the study of something in a tropical environment?

10 If you got a plane ticket right now, where would it go?

To Houston, TX where all my friends from undergrad are.

11 If you had one superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation. I’d love to travel the world.

12 Is there anything you strongly recommend we watch and/or read and/or listen to?

Anything by Neil Gaiman. Some of his short story collections are on audible, and they’re great for winding down before bed.

13 It’s your day off. What do you want to do?

Go rock climbing, then watch trash tv with my friends on discord.

My computer, coffee, and chocolate.

Grapefruit sparkling water with a lemon/lime wedge

16 What book did you read in school that positively shaped you?

I really enjoyed reading greek myths, but I’m not sure that they positively shaped me

17 What did you want to be when you grew up?

A doctor. Turns out I just wanted to be the OTHER kind of doctor.

18 What drives you and keeps you going?

Thinking of the big picture. Looking back on all I’ve accomplished and how far I’ve come helps me move forward.

19 What got you excited in science?

Doing science experiments with my Nana as a kid. We also collected a lot of bugs and rocks.

20 What excites you about science now?

Being at the edge of science is really exciting! The thought that I get to discover new things and put them out into the world is just so neat to me.

21 What is a guilty pleasure of yours?

Trash tv. My favorite right now is Love Island!

22 What is a secret talent of yours?

I’m pretty good at getting large groups of people to dance when no one else is dancing at events. Maybe they just feel bad when seeing one person dance on their own?

25 What is one of the best pieces of advice you’ve received?

Never assume anyone’s actions are due to malice. Most of the time, other people’s actions have nothing to do with you.

I’ve always wanted to try rock climbing outdoors, but I’m afraid of falling to my death.

Care less about what other people think
