Fhallon Ware-Gilmore is a native of Anaheim, California and is currently a third-year doctoral candidate pursuing her PhD in Entomology with a concentration in “Vector Biology” at the Pennsylvania State University.

Her dissertation explores the role of global climate change, and its impact on the assemblage of infectious diseases, in particular, viruses transmitted by arthropod vectors. Her research focuses on understanding the role that thermal performance plays in the transmission of dengue virus by the mosquito, Aedes aegypti, and the consequences this may have on human health. Her additional passion lies in supporting scientific outreach within marginalized communities, and in understanding the health disparities associated with vector-borne diseases within communities of color.

19 What got you excited in science?

As a child, my mom would take me to these “Science Camps” at the aquarium where I had the opportunity to interact with real scientists. I remember one day at camp we were talking about reptiles, and we had the chance to see an Albino crocodile. I was so fascinated by why the crocodile looked the way it did, and remember bombarding my mother with questions the entire ride home.  That same week I remember going to the book store every day with my mom and asking the clerk for books on crocodiles that I could check out.  I think that’s when I truly became excited about science.
